Poetry Reaches the Stars
Poetry Soars To the Heavens...
U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón is revealing a new poem that will fly into space aboard NASA’s Europa Clipper mission on a yearslong journey to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. The poem, first shared publicly during a special reading at the Library of Congress, will be engraved on the spacecraft set to launch in October 2024.
Imagine the power of poetry to have reached such a pinnacle, to be thought of as essential to human experience, that it will be flown into the heavens to transcend time and space, and as a token of what it means to be alive.
I can’t imagine the pride Ada Limón must feel to be able to inscribe her words into eternity. She’s a brilliant poet and I admire her sense of how to describe essence; how to proclaim elements of unspoken knowing and hope.
